M88 engine in BMW M1

1975 M88 engine in BMW M1

The original M88 racing 24 valve engine of 3.5 litres was first used in the 1974 fuel crisis-curtailed racing programme for the previous BMW CSL coupe.

By 1975 it was producing a regular 430 bhp, but vertical installation brought it closer to 470 bhp, the trim in which it was raced within BMW M1.

Paul Rosche's road version of this powerplant became the 277 bhp powerplant of the late seventies M1.
